Ever since the trailer for Challengers dropped, people have been eager to know more about the central love triangle. The film tells the story of Art Mike Faist a former tennis champion who plots a comeback with the help of his wife Tashi Zendaya.
But once you forego the heteronormative lens about relationships, you see three people who want nothing more but a win. Regardless of how the director intended the dynamic to be understood, you cannot experience the film with a closed mind. The thrill of the film is rooted in their competitive, destructive and primal survival instincts. The movie swings between breathtaking shots of countryside scenery and the actors in their glorious racket-smashing moments.
It is an intense decades-long love affair between two men. Zendaya plays the strict, disapproving mommy keeping them apart. Intended as a star vehicle for Zendaya, it fails due to casting. Zendaya is a prop keeping their friendship heterosexual.
