The Russians have taken several villages along the main road to Kharkiv, which is close to the Russian border, and dozens of civilians have been killed in the city by Russian missiles in recent weeks. Military experts assess that the Russian army is aiming to get within artillery range of the city. Global has been forced to draw up evacuation plans, which will be triggered if Russian soldiers get to within 30km 19 miles of the city. Vasyl Malikov, the Kharkiv coordinator of Alliance.
KharkivPride took place September , 7 months after Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite major challenges such as airstrikes and the risk of targeted attacks against the event, KharkivPride was able to successfully organise several Pride activities, ending with a parade in which over 30 people participated. In recent months, Kharkiv has been subjected to recurring missile attacks. Due to the risk of airstrikes, the parade took place in the Kharkiv subway.
Earlier this month, a group of activists gathered to add a different type of flag to the ever-growing collection. They had unicorns in their centre, to represent each gay soldier that had been killed in the war. The deaths of LGBT soldiers in Ukraine have exposed an inequality. They do not have the same rights as heterosexual troops.
The first ever Pride march in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv descended into scenes of violence Sunday, as mobs of ultranationalist thugs hunted down and assaulted marchers at the end of the event. Three marchers and two police officers were injured in the clashes, while police arrested 17 far-right demonstrators for their role in the attacks. The march — the first ever held in the conservative eastern city — faced opposition before it even took place, with Mayor Gennady Kernes threatening legal action to try to prevent the event, and far-right groups threatening violence if it went ahead. But once the march was over and Pride participants dispersed, they became targets for the roaming far-right mobs.
