While San Francisco and Los Angeles are renowned for their gay scenes, San Diego has long been one of the US' most tolerant cities. Los Angeles was home to the US' first gay rights organisation and coined the term "Pride" to refer to gay advocacy. San Francisco hosted the country's first gay rights march and elected the first openly gay man to public office. In , California issued a travel ban prohibiting state-funded travel to any state "that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression".
The San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center, Inc. The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities to the betterment of our entire San Diego region. The Center provides more than 80, direct service visits annually to San Diego community members, and through its events, activities, and advocacy, touches the lives of thousands more. In the last few years, The Center has expanded its housing programs and resources from one program — the Sunburst Youth Housing Project, a unit building specifically for youth experiencing homelessness — to a continuum of services.
